About the role

We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer in Bengaluru to design, build and run production services end to end. You'll take a problem from a loose description to a shipped, reliable system — and you'll be trusted to do it without step-by-step direction.

Our India engineering team is taking full ownership of core products and growing quickly, including a ground-up rebuild of a customer-critical service. You'll work closely with your Engineering Manager, Product, and Customer Support, and help raise the technical bar of the team around you.

What you'll own in your first year

  • Own: Own your services end to end with speed, quality, depth and long-term vision — design, build, release, monitor, fix.
  • Hard problems. Take ambiguous problems, break them down, and drive them to a shipped solution with little hand-holding.
  • Design. Write and defend design docs for your area, and make the tradeoffs explicit.
  • Quality. Treat testing, observability and on-call as part of the work, so customers don't find our bugs.
  • Customers. Understand who uses what you build, and use support issues and usage data to decide what to fix next.
  • Raising the bar. Review code thoughtfully, mentor newer engineers, and help interview candidates.

What you must bring

These are the bar. We can't teach them on the job.

  • Experience: 3–6 years building production software. More is welcome if the role and level are the right fit for you. We level on demonstrated scope, not years alone.
  • You've shipped systems that run in production. Not just features handed off — services you built, released and supported when they broke.
  • You are exceptional at problem solving. You take ambiguous, system-level problems with more than one valid answer, reason from first principles, weigh the tradeoffs, and land on a solution that's simple and correct.
  • You work with minimal handholding. You've taken loosely defined work from start to finish without needing someone to break it down for you.
  • Passion for making System NFRs: You never lose sight of System NFRs to create highly available and extensible systems which are scalable and low on maintenance.

We care how you engineer more than which language you did it in.

Technical background

You've built and run production systems with a modern stack, such as:

  • Cloud: AWS — you've designed, deployed and operated services on it, not just consumed them.
  • Languages: strong in at least one modern language such as Python, Java or JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Frameworks: modern service frameworks such as FastAPI, Node.js or equivalents.
  • Databases, in depth: data modeling, query and index optimization, and scaling (replication, partitioning, caching). You can walk us through a schema you designed and a slow query or bottleneck you fixed, with the before and after.
  • Fundamentals: API design, concurrency, caching, and how distributed systems fail.

Exact tools matter less than depth. Strong experience on an equivalent stack is welcome.

What sets great candidates apart

  • Impact you can explain. You can name a result, the baseline it moved from, and what you did to move it.
  • One hard problem, told in detail. A scale, performance or debugging story where you understood the internals, not just the API.
  • Ownership over time. A system you've owned across versions and kept improving, not one you built and left.
  • Framework mindset: You spot repeated custom implementations and turn them into reusable frameworks or libraries others build on.
  • Product sense. You've pushed back on a requirement, simplified scope, or suggested a better solution for the user.
  • Lifting others. Code reviews, docs or mentoring that made the people around you faster.

What we look for in everyone we hire

Whatever the role, we hire for six things.

  • Customer obsession. You know who uses what you build and what changed for them. You treat support issues and on-call as signal, not chores.
  • Impact over activity. You measure success by outcomes, not tickets closed or lines written. You'll choose the boring solution if it ships sooner.
  • Honesty. You're specific about your own part in team work, flag problems early, and say what didn't work.
  • Independence. You don't wait to be told what to do next. You find the problem worth solving and get it done with little hand-holding. You will work with leaders who will partner with you in the journey.
  • Passion. Not the word on a resume — the evidence: a side project you kept alive, a technology you went deep on, things you taught others.
  • Depth. At least one system or domain you could talk about for an hour, down to the internals and the tradeoffs. Years in a role aren't depth; complexity handled is.

Itron is committed to building an inclusive and diverse workforce and providing an authentic workplace experience for all employees. If you are excited about this role but your past experiences don't perfectly align with every requirement, we encourage you to apply anyway. In the end, you may be just who we are looking for!

The successful candidate's starting wage will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills and experience.
