Electrical Engineer - Mid/Senior Level

AST SpaceMobile

Lanham, Maryland, United StatesFull timeEngineeringPosted October 19, 2026

AST SpaceMobile and our global partners are building the first and only space-based cellular broadband network to be accessible by standard smartphones. Called SpaceMobile, this ultra-powerful network is being designed to provide connectivity at 4G/5G speeds everywhere on the planet – on land, at sea and in flight.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Electrical Engineer (Mid/Senior Level) to join our team in a full-time role. In this position, you will lead the design and development of satellite electrical systems, owning projects from concept through delivery. You will work within the Electrical and Power Subsystem (EPS) and across other subsystems, driving system-level electrical architecture decisions, contributing to new product design, and mentoring junior engineers. You will support our satellites across their full life cycle, from early design and integration through launch and their operational lifetime on orbit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the design and development of satellite electrical systems, including batteries, solar arrays, power conditioning, and power distribution, from requirements through delivery.
  • Lead system-level electrical design, including architecture trades, power budgeting, load analysis, and interface definition between spacecraft subsystems.
  • Contribute to new product design, from early concept and trade studies through detailed design, prototyping, and production.
  • Plan and manage electrical projects, including scope, schedule, and technical risk, and coordinate with suppliers and vendors as needed.
  • Author and review technical documentation, including electrical schematics, block diagrams, interface control documents, and design reviews (PDR/CDR).
  • Analyze on-orbit electrical performance data, lead anomaly investigations, and feed lessons learned back into future designs.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (mechanical, thermal, RF, command and data handling, mission operations, and software) and mentor junior engineers and interns.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field; Master’s degree a plus.

Experience

  • 3–10 years of professional experience in electrical engineering, power electronics, or systems engineering, ideally for space or aerospace applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to own projects end to end and deliver electrical hardware from design through production.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Spaceflight heritage designing satellite Electrical and Power Systems, including solar arrays, batteries, power conditioning, and power distribution.
  • Deep knowledge of power electronics, circuit design, and derating, worst-case, and reliability analysis.
  • Expertise with schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, Mentor Graphics, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar).
  • Experience with radiation effects, EMI/EMC, and space-grade part selection.
  • Experience taking new products from concept to flight, including leading design reviews.

Soft Skills

  • Strong ownership mindset and sound engineering judgment when making design trade-offs.
  • Ability to lead and collaborate effectively within cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to technical reviewers and customers.
  • Interest in mentoring and developing junior engineers.
  • Attention to detail in design and documentation.

Technology Stack

  • Electrical analysis and simulation tools: MATLAB, SPICE.
  • Schematic capture and PCB design tools: Altium, Mentor Graphics, or similar.
  • Requirements and documentation tools (varies by project).

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a standard office environment and use a computer for extended periods.
  • Occasional hands-on work with hardware in laboratory and cleanroom environments.
